Have you recently, or are you about to transition from the military life to the civilian workforce?
The reality is many ex-service men and women have difficulties making the connection between the skills they learned serving their country and those needed in the civilian world.
But, it doesn’t have to be this way.
With a transition plan, military personnel can make the successful transition from military careers to civilian jobs by leveraging what they do best. Jobs in the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, in truth, prepare you directly for civilian careers like engineering, programming, mechanics, and leadership.
Service members are innate leaders, and spending a few years in the military sharpens those skills. In the civilian marketplace, the same rules apply: You need good leaders to drive success. As a result, entry-level management positions are often an excellent starting point for service members who are transitioning out of the military.
Do your homework. Get professional advice. On your resume and during an interview, know the key words that relate to leadership and teamwork — examples include cooperation, motivation, teamwork, determination, and culture. You want to highlight that not only can you lead a team, but can motivate others to success. In describing your skills, you need to strike a balance between being someone that drives success, but also knows how to inspire others.
Successful Transition Looks Like This:
- Look for the work that interests you in a field where you have skills. To be successful in your transition, you must think differently about what you have to offer an employer and the world. Seek help finding jobs in the marketplace that you are qualified for and interested in.
- Determine what skills and talents you have and how to express them in civilian terminology.
- Refocus your resume to emphasize your talents and the skills as they apply to your desired career. Highlight your past experience in civilian terminology.
- Set both short and long-term goals and objectives for your career transition with focused determination. In other words, go after it.
